Pizza Avoidance Strategy

October 13, 2017

Many people, myself included, find it very difficult to avoid giving in to the temptation to eat inappropriate foods, for example, a large Domino's pizza (other pizzas are available), to yourself, followed by nausea and terrible post gluttony shame. This can really spoil your diet, undoing the good work you have done by eating sensibly the rest of the week and it makes you feel awful. We start out with such good intentions so why do we end up doing this?

You're not entirely to blame as your body has a kind of energy "thermostat" hormone, leptin, which is released when your fat cells are at capacity. When your reserves are low, from exercise or dieting, levels of leptin drop and you feel hungry. This effect is likely to be especially heightened if you are used to a carbohydrate rich diet and you suddenly start controlling your carbohydrate intake as your energy levels will feel lower due to lower blood sugar so your body will definitely realise that it's missing something. When you diet and exercise you will have powerful cravings...

Your brain, which in biological terms is no different to a caveman's brain is wired to reward behaviours that increase your likelihood of survival so when you eat high calorie foods your brain produces endorphins. Put simply, if you eat a pizza, which is full of fat and carbohydrate and salt, your brain gives you some drugs to stay thank you. This makes it extremely difficult to avoid eating junk food as your hormones make you want to eat it and your brain rewards you for doing so even if your "higher" consciousness realises that this is a bad thing. Eating junk food is actually addictive in the same way that drugs are and we can easily develop dependency on junk food in just the same way that people form addictions to other substances.

Adjusting your diet so that you consume more fat and protein and less carbs will eventually make cravings less powerful and improve your energy levels but in the short term you simply need to make sure that you don't let yourself get too hungry.

Make an appointment for a free consultation today and I will help you to design a diet to help you manage your your hunger, and lose weight. If you are struggling with dieting then this might just be what you have been waiting for...
